The Falkland Islands is an archipelago (group of islands) in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The islands are British Overseas Territory which is self-governing while the United Kingdom is responsible for defending the islands.
The islands lie 300 miles (480 km) off the coast of Argentina.
On 2 April 1982, Argentina invaded the Falklands which lead to a war between the United Kingdom and Argentina called the Falklands War which ended on 14 June 1982 with was won by the British.
