She is the visionary founder of SMARTZero, a trailblazing company focused on empowering individuals, small businesses, and gig workers to reduce their carbon footprint while driving innovation in transportation solutions worldwide.
Early Life and Education
Ramya was born on 6th July 1982 at Neyveli GH Township in Southern India. Growing up in colonial British bungalows across rural towns in Tamil Nadu, she was deeply influenced by her father’s profession with Southern Railways. Her early life instilled a strong sense of adaptability and cultural awareness, which would later shape her global entrepreneurial mindset.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in engineering from the prestigious National Institute of Technology, Suratkal, Karnataka, before pursuing advanced business studies in Singapore and Dubai, completing her Master’s in Business Administration. She further honed her expertise at the Said Business School, University of Oxford, equipping her with world-class insights to navigate the complex global technology landscape.
Career
Ramya’s career began at Ericsson as a grassroots-level engineer, where she gained invaluable technical experience. Driven by her passion for technology and sustainability, she later joined HCL Technologies, focusing on financial services and insurance clients across the United Kingdom and multiple geographies.
An avid lover of nature and a visionary leader, Ramya transitioned to entrepreneurship, determined to create impactful solutions for the gig economy, immigrants, and students. In 2023, she founded SMARTZero, a global platform addressing the critical challenge of decarbonising private transportation. Within just two years, SMARTZero has expanded under three dynamic brands:
- STARZero: Supporting individual small businesses and gig workers in tracking miles, offsetting CO2, and managing tax reclaims.
- PayEV: A social media-integrated EV community platform that empowers users to find charging stations and connect with like-minded enthusiasts.
- FuelSense: A comprehensive fuel management and running-cost tracking solution for personal car and bike users.
Additionally, SMARTZero is developing a beta version of pay-per-mile and user-based insurance, aimed at providing faster, more accessible coverage for drivers worldwide.
