Kingdom of Ireland

The Kingdom of Ireland (Early Modern Irish: Ríoghacht Éireann; Modern Irish: Ríocht na hÉireann) was a kingdom which existed from 1542–1800 and comprised the modern day Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It was ruled separately by the monarchs of the Kingdom of England and then the Kingdom of Great Britain. Until it was unified with the Kingdom of Great Britain to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland with the 1800 Acts of Union, which came into effect on 1 January 1800.

It was preceded by the Lordship of Ireland, which was ruled by the King of England as "Lord of Ireland".
