Hong Wai Onn

Hong Wai Onn (born in Ipoh, Malaysia) is a Malaysian chartered chemical engineer, author, and environmentalist recognized for his contributions to the palm oil processing industry and sustainable development. He holds the title of European Engineer (Eur Ing) and is a member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) in the United Kingdom. Hong is also a Malaysia Book of Records holder for writing the "Longest Palm Oil Milling Memoir" with his debut book, A Chemical Engineer in the Palm Oil Milling Industry.

Early Life and Education

Hong Wai Onn was born and raised in Ipoh, a city in Perak, Malaysia, known for its limestone caves, mountains, and culinary heritage. He grew up in a small family and pursued his higher education at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, where he earned a degree in chemical engineering. Later, he obtained an Executive MBA with Honours from the Quantic School of Business and Technology.

Career

Hong began his professional career in the palm oil industry, initially working with Genting Plantations. With over 15 years of experience, he has held roles spanning production, engineering, project management, applied research, process safety, and leadership within the palm oil and biotechnology sectors. His work focuses on leveraging science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to enhance industrial processes and promote environmental sustainability, particularly through circular economy principles and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives.

As a chartered chemical engineer, Hong is actively involved with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), serving on its Learned Society Committee and as a professional reviewer for chartered engineer applications. His expertise has positioned him as a thought leader in Malaysia’s engineering and sustainability sectors.

Writing and Publications

In August 2020, Hong published his first book, A Chemical Engineer in the Palm Oil Milling Industry, a memoir detailing his experiences and insights in the industry. The book, consisting of 52,302 words, earned him recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records under the "Human World" category as the "Longest Palm Oil Milling Memoir." Hong has expressed plans to write additional books focusing on the roles of chemical engineers in business and project management, alongside continuing to produce articles on palm oil processing.

Recognition

Hong Wai Onn’s contributions have been acknowledged through several accolades. In December 2024, he was featured in the sixth edition of Britishpedia’s Biographical Encyclopaedia: Successful People in Malaysia and Singapore, published by the British Publishing House, highlighting his impact in engineering and sustainability. Additionally, his record-breaking memoir has cemented his status as a notable figure in Malaysian literature and industry.

Personal Life

Hong is a part-time author alongside his engineering career. He has cited leadership author John C. Maxwell as an influence on his approach to leadership and public speaking.
