Early Life

Gabriela Jimeno, better known by her stage name Ela Minus, was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. From a young age, she displayed a passion for music, learning to play drums by the age of 12. During her teenage years, she became a drummer in the hardcore band Ratón Pérez, immersing herself in the punk and hardcore music scenes, which shaped her DIY ethos and artistic identity.

Ela later moved to the United States to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she studied music synthesis. It was here that she discovered her love for synthesizers and electronic music, marking the beginning of her transition to a solo career as an electronic music artist.

Career

Ela Minus is celebrated for her innovative approach to live electronic music. She exclusively uses analog synthesizers and drum machines, shunning laptops and pre-recorded tracks to create raw, human-centered performances. Her debut album, *acts of rebellion* (2020), released under Domino Recording Company, earned critical acclaim for its fusion of intimate vocals, pulsating beats, and politically charged lyrics. Tracks like "they told us it was hard, but they were wrong" and "megapunk" encapsulate her ethos of empowerment and resistance.

Her live performances are immersive, blending meticulous craftsmanship with spontaneous energy. Ela has graced stages at prestigious festivals and events worldwide, including Primavera Sound, Pitchfork Music Festival, and Boiler Room sessions. She has also collaborated with notable artists like Helado Negro and DJ Python, further solidifying her influence in the global electronic music scene.
