Dr Joy Trueblood
Dr. Joy Trueblood is a highly respected and accomplished physician with over three decades of experience in the medical field. She is a board-certified pathologist with a specialty in cytopathology and has worked in various capacities in hospitals and clinics throughout Iowa.[1][2]
Dr. Trueblood's professional experience includes serving as the Medical Director of the Department of Pathology at The Iowa Clinic, PC, and as the Vice Chairman and Acting Chief of the Department of Pathology at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines. She has also held positions as an Associate Pathologist and Medical Director of the Cytology Laboratory at the Veterans' Administration Regional Medical Center.[3]
Throughout her career, Dr. Trueblood has been actively involved in the medical community, participating in cancer conferences, tumor boards, and other educational events. She has also served as an adjunct professor at Des Moines University, where she taught pathology courses to medical students.[4]
In addition to her work in the medical field, Dr. Trueblood is committed to philanthropy and supporting the next generation of medical professionals. She has established the Dr. Joy Trueblood Scholarship for Medical Students, which recognizes exceptional medical students in the United States.[5]

Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Dr. Joy Trueblood was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. She attended Grand View College in Des Moines, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary studies, focusing on Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. During the summer of 1981, she also completed a course in Inorganic Chemistry at Drake University in Des Moines.
After completing her undergraduate studies, Dr. Trueblood attended the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, where she received her Medical Degree (M.D.) in May 1986. She then completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago from July 1986 to June 1989.
Following her residency, Dr. Trueblood completed a residency in Internal Medicine at UnityPoint-Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from July 1989 to June 1990.
State Licensure and Board Certification[edit | edit source]
Dr. Trueblood is licensed to practice medicine in Iowa and holds license number 26988. She is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology, having received her certification in 1990, and in Cytopathology, having received her certification in 1996.
Career[edit | edit source]
Dr. Trueblood has had an extensive career in pathology, spanning over three decades. She has held various positions, including serving as the Medical Director of the Department of Pathology at The Iowa Clinic, PC in West Des Moines, Iowa, from November 2007 to December 2019. During this time, she was responsible for the administrative oversight of an anatomic pathology lab and served as the bench pathologist for all specimens received and processed by the laboratory.[7]
Dr. Trueblood also held positions at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, where she served as the Vice Chairman and Acting Chief of the Department of Pathology, Medical Director of the Cytology Laboratory, and Medical Director of the Mercy School of Cytotechnology from May 1992 to October 2007.[8]
Prior to her positions at The Iowa Clinic and Mercy One Medical Center, Dr. Trueblood served as the Associate Pathologist and Medical Director of the Cytology Laboratory at the Veterans’ Administration Regional Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, from July 1990 to April 1992.
Throughout her career, Dr. Trueblood has also been involved in teaching, including serving as an Adjunct Professor of Pathology courses at Des Moines University from approximately 1996 to 2006.[9]

Dr. Trueblood is an Emeritus Fellow of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and a Fellow of the International Society of Urologic Pathologists (ISUP).[10]
