Early Life

Scowl was formed in 2019 in Santa Cruz, California, a city with a rich hardcore punk scene. The band's lineup was shaped by a shared passion for energetic, raw punk music that conveyed emotional intensity and a sense of rebellion. They quickly became known for their dynamic live shows, powerful vocals, and politically charged lyrics.

Career

In 2021, Scowl released their highly acclaimed debut album, *How Flowers Grow*. The album was a significant breakthrough, solidifying their place in the hardcore scene. Critics praised their blend of aggressive punk riffs, intense vocals, and thought-provoking lyrics that captured the raw emotion of youth and social struggles. This success brought them both attention and criticism, including allegations of being an "industry plant" due to their rapid rise to prominence. However, Scowl persisted, staying true to their roots and following their own path.

In 2023, they released *Psychic Dance Routine*, an EP that pushed their sound further into punk rock territory, while still maintaining the abrasive energy of their earlier work. The EP was produced by Will Yip and marked a significant shift in the band's sound, with a more refined production style and a sharper focus on melody and rhythm. The band’s ability to maintain their punk spirit while evolving musically earned them widespread acclaim.

Scowl made a surprising move in 2024 by jumping from Flatspot Records to Dead Oceans, a label known for supporting artists in various genres. This transition signaled a new chapter in their career, which culminated in the announcement of their highly anticipated sophomore album, *Are We All Angels*, set for release in 2025.

The album is already generating buzz, with the fiery single “Not Hell Not Heaven” receiving praise for its intense energy and raw emotion. Vocalist Kat Moss explains the song’s theme as a struggle with victimization, and the desire to take ownership of one's power. Along with “Not Hell Not Heaven,” the album also features the previously released track “Special,” which has garnered attention for its explosive sound and cathartic energy.

The album was produced by Will Yip and mixed by Rich Costey, and the music video for “Not Hell Not Heaven” was directed by Sean Stout, reflecting the band’s creative vision and their commitment to engaging with fans in a powerful way.

Personal Life

Scowl's members have remained largely private about their personal lives, preferring to let their music and performances speak for themselves. Their no-nonsense approach to punk rock and their refusal to conform to industry expectations has made them a favorite among hardcore punk fans. With their evolving sound and commitment to authenticity, Scowl continues to make a significant impact in the punk scene.
