Roshan Shrestha (Nepali: रोशन श्रेष्ठ; born 14 October 1996) is a Nepali investigative journalist and digital media innovator. He established the independent news platform Khoj Samachar, founded the open-knowledge project WikiNP, and created the Roshan Shrestha App, a digital tool offering verified news and civic-information services. His work focuses on transparency, youth empowerment, and the use of technology to expand access to credible information.[1][2]
Early life and education
Shrestha was born in Bahrabise, a small town in the Sindhupalchok District of Nepal. Growing up in a rural community exposed him to social issues that later influenced his reporting.[3] He attended Shree Bachchhala Devi Higher Secondary School, where he developed an early interest in writing and public affairs.[4][5]
Professional background
Shrestha began reporting professionally in 2021. His early work concentrated on public accountability, social justice, and the impact of digital platforms on local governance.[6] In 2025, he was profiled by Global Voices for his leadership in technology-driven journalism and anti-corruption reporting.[7] Shrestha is regarded as part of a new generation of Nepali journalists blending investigative methods with data-based storytelling to counter misinformation and foster civic awareness.[8]
Khoj Samachar
In 2021, Shrestha founded Khoj Samachar, an online news service under Bethel Media House Pvt. Ltd. The outlet operates in both Nepali and English and emphasizes verified, evidence-based reporting. It covers national politics, governance, and international developments, earning recognition as a rising digital newsroom in Nepal.[9][10]
Digital initiatives
Shrestha also created the Roshan Shrestha App, launched in 2025 for Android and iOS. The platform offers tools for fact-checking, a multilingual Nepali calendar, and direct civic-service resources.[11] Within months, it surpassed 100,000 downloads and gained visibility in app charts across countries with large Nepali populations, including Qatar, Japan, and the UAE.[12] The initiative was acknowledged in Nepal’s federal parliament for expanding digital access to reliable information.[13]
Publications
Shrestha authored the e-book The Digital Voice of Nepal, published in October 2025 through Draft2Digital. The book narrates his journey from rural Sindhupalchok to his role in shaping Nepal’s digital-media transformation and advocates for using information technology to drive social progress.[14][15]
Recognition and influence
Media coverage has highlighted Shrestha’s work in combating online disinformation and supporting ethical journalism in Nepal.[16] He has been featured in multiple national and international outlets for his contribution to independent reporting and digital transparency.[17][18]
