Rom the Space Knight is a fictional character created by Parker Brothers in 1979.

Rom the Space Knight

Rom was created by Scott Dankman, Richard C. Levy, and Bryan L. McCoy for Parker Brothers and is now a Hasbro asset. After the toy was licensed to Marvel Comics, Rom became a character that debuted in the eponymous American comic book Rom: Spaceknight, by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema.

Development

Rom the Space Knight was created by Parker Brothers in 1979.

Parker Brothers was merged with Kenner in 1985 to form Kenner Parker Toys Inc.

Kenner Parker Toys Inc. was purchased by Tonka in 1987.

Hasbro purchased Tonka in 1991.

In July 2015, IDW Publishing began publishing a new Rom comic book series as part of the Hasbro Comic Book Universe.

In 2017 Hasbro released a new 1/18 scale Rom figure in the style of their current day G.I. Joes. This figure was part of a SDCC 2017 exclusive set called Hasbro Revolution.

In May 2023, Marvel reacquired the rights to begin publishing omnibus editions collecting the Rom material they had previously published in the 1970s and 1980s.

In 2025 Hasbro released a 1/12 scale Marvel Legends style Rom figure.

Comics

1979 Marvel Comics

To build interest in the toy, Parker Brothers licensed the character to Marvel Comics, which created a comic book featuring Rom. The comic expanded on the premise that Rom was a cyborg and provided the character with an origin and personality, and established the character was firmly grounded in the Marvel Universe, having regular encounters with mainstream heroes and villains.

2016 IDW Publishing

IDW Publishing licensed the character from Hasbro, and in May 2016, released Rom #0 as part of Free Comic Book Day. The free issue served as a prologue to a new ongoing series which began in July.

In Micronauts First Strike issue 1 by IDW Publishing Acroyear, Biotron, Orbital Defender, Microtron and Space Glider fought the Dire Wraiths and traveled in the Astro Station while on Earth. They were then attacked by Rom the Space Knight who mistook them for Dire Wraiths.

Toys

• Parker Brothers Rom the Space Knight (1979)

This 1/5 scale figure stands about 13 inches tall. Powered by a 9 volt battery.

• Hasbro Revolution (2017)

A box set of Hasbro action figures including Jetfire, Matt Trakker, Rom the Spaceknight, a Dire Wraith, Action Man and Leoric.

A box set also included small Micronauts figurines of classic characters of Acroyear, Baron Karza and Biotron. There was also the alien Xant, a female Space Glider Phenolo-Phi, a green Time Traveler named Quin-Tillus, the cyborg Oberon, and robots Betatron and Gammatron.

Rom the Spaceknight came with a Neutralizer weapon and a stand.

Rom The Spaceknight was made using some existing G.I. Joe parts and some original parts. He had the arms of 2015 Gung-Ho and the legs of 2008 Armored Cobra Commander, with a new head, torso, and waist.

The set was a SDCC 2017 exclusive.

• RetroRobotRadio Rom (2023)

A four inch tall 3d printed figure made of gray nylon designed by Mathew Robert Ignash. It was first released on Shapeways and later other sites. This figure features 5mm peg and port design. It comes with a Neutralizer and Rocket Pack.

• Hasbro Marvel Legends Rom Spaceknight (2025)

In January 2025, Hasbro announced the release of an 6-inch action figure of Rom, inspired by his appearance from the Marvel comic books, as part of their Marvel Legends product line.
