Mumbai
Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India and the seventh-most populous city in the world. Located on the west coast of India, Mumbai has a deep natural harbor and a rich history as a commercial and cultural hub. The city is known for its diverse culture, vibrant economy, and as the home of Bollywood, India's Hindi-language film industry.

Etymology
The name "Mumbai" is derived from "Mumbā," the name of the local Hindu goddess Mumbadevi, and "Aai," which means "mother" in Marathi. The city was known as "Bombay" under British colonial rule, a name derived from the Portuguese "Bombaim," meaning "good bay." The official name was changed to Mumbai in 1995 to reflect its local heritage.
History
Mumbai has a long and complex history. Originally, it was a group of seven islands inhabited by the Koli fishing community. The islands were ruled by various Hindu dynasties before being ceded to the Portuguese in the 16th century. In 1661, the British East India Company took control of the islands as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza, who married King Charles II of England. Under British rule, Mumbai grew into a major port city, playing a significant role in India's trade and commerce. The city became a prominent center for the Indian independence movement in the 20th century and later emerged as a leading financial center of independent India.
Geography and Climate
Mumbai is situated on the western coast of India, bordering the Arabian Sea. The city spans over 603 square kilometers, making it one of the densest urban areas in the world. The climate is tropical, with hot, humid summers and a monsoon season from June to September. Winters are mild and dry. The city's layout is a mix of natural and man-made landforms. The original seven islands were merged through reclamation projects, creating the current metropolis. Mumbai is divided into two regions: the city proper (South Mumbai) and the suburban district (Greater Mumbai).
Economy
Mumbai is considered the financial capital of India. It hosts the headquarters of several major Indian and multinational corporations, banks, and financial institutions. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), one of the world's oldest stock exchanges, is located here. The city also serves as a hub for industries such as textiles, engineering, healthcare, and information technology. Apart from traditional industries, Mumbai is known for its film and entertainment industry. The city produces the highest number of films in India annually, primarily through its Bollywood studios.
Culture and Society
Mumbai is a melting pot of cultures, languages, and traditions. Its population is composed of people from all over India, leading to a rich diversity in food, festivals, and religious practices. Marathi is the official language, but Hindi and English are widely spoken. The city celebrates various festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, Eid, and Christmas. Mumbai is also known for its vibrant arts scene, with numerous theaters, galleries, and cultural institutions. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and the National Gallery of Modern Art are among the prominent cultural landmarks.
Infrastructure
The city has a well-developed infrastructure, although it faces challenges due to its dense population. Mumbai's transportation system includes suburban railways, buses, metro lines, and an extensive road network. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is one of the busiest airports in India, connecting Mumbai to major global cities. Despite its modern development, Mumbai grapples with issues such as traffic congestion, inadequate housing, and environmental pollution. Slums like Dharavi are symbolic of the city's glaring income inequality, where luxury high-rises stand alongside informal settlements.
Tourism
Mumbai attracts millions of tourists each year due to its historical landmarks, beaches, and cultural attractions. Notable tourist sites include the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and Elephanta Caves. Juhu Beach and Colaba Causeway are popular spots for both locals and visitors.
