Hornetroid is a fictional character from the Micronauts series introduced in 1979.
Micronauts
Hornetroid is a fictional character or vehicle in the Micronauts series. Just as Antron, he comes from the far off galaxy of Thoraxid.
In a Mego catalog an Antron can be seen piloting Hornetroid and Sharkos.[1]
The box for the Hornetroid refers to him as a "myrapod", which is actually the group of animals that includes centipedes and millipedes, not hornets or dragonflies.
Development
Hornetroid was designed by California R&D for Mego.
The Hornetroid was developed as a dragonfly, but his name suggests it is a hornet.
During development the Hornetroid had several features that didn't survive into the final toys, including a removable brain. The prototype of the Hornetroid was orange. This prototype lacked the parts reused from the Beam Tripler and Battle Cruiser that were on the final release.[2]
Mego released Hornetroid in 1979. It was also released by Gig and Grand Toys.
The Hornetroid was the inspiration for the 2015 Glyos figure called the Hornet Mushi.[3]
In 2018 several parts for Hornetroid were released on Shapeways by Mathew Robert Ignash.
