Prior to recording, Washington attended Central Michigan University for one year before being put on academic probation. After moving back to Detroit he befriended a man named James Lewis (who he refers to as "Jamie" in his music), a former affiliate of the '''Young Boys Inc.''' drug gang, and eventually began engaging in criminal activity.
