Everipedia
Everipedia is a for-profit, blockchain-based online encyclopedia founded in December 2014. It aims to build a more modern, inclusive alternative to traditional encyclopedias like Wikipedia. Unlike Wikipedia, Everipedia allows articles about any topic as long as they meet the site's editorial standards, and incentivizes contributors through blockchain-based token rewards.
History
Everipedia was founded in December 2014 by Sam Kazemian, Theodor Forselius, Travis Moore, and Mahbod Moghadam, who was also a co-founder of Genius. The site launched in early 2015, initially as a fork of Wikipedia’s content, with a goal to modernize the user experience and to include topics not covered by traditional encyclopedias.
In 2017, Everipedia announced plans to move its platform onto the EOS blockchain, introducing a token economy to reward contributors. This transition aimed to decentralize content hosting and governance.
Features
Everipedia differs from Wikipedia in several ways:
- It allows a broader range of topics, including content that may not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines.
- It incorporates a blockchain-based infrastructure that stores edits and incentivizes editors with cryptocurrency (IQ tokens).
- The governance of the platform is partly decentralized, with token holders able to vote on proposals.
Reception
Everipedia has received mixed responses. Supporters praise its attempt to create a censorship-resistant knowledge base and to financially reward contributors. Critics have raised concerns about quality control, misinformation, and the effectiveness of a token-based editing model.
