DOGE-1 is a planned lunar satellite mission developed by Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC) in partnership with SpaceX. The mission is notable for being the first spaceflight funded entirely with cryptocurrency, specifically Dogecoin (DOGE). According to nanosatellite databases, the launch is currently scheduled for a 2025 window aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.

Background

The mission was first announced in May 2021. Shortly after, SpaceX founder Elon Musk posted on Twitter that SpaceX would launch “the first crypto in space” and “the first meme in space.” The announcement drew significant media attention and established the mission’s cultural association with internet and cryptocurrency communities.

Objectives

DOGE-1 will deploy a 12U CubeSat into lunar orbit. The payload will include a digital display designed to project images, logos, and artwork. These visuals will be captured by onboard cameras and transmitted back to Earth. GEC described the concept as a “cosmic billboard,” intended to demonstrate new forms of media and advertising in space.

Funding

The mission’s financing is entirely in Dogecoin, making it the first commercial spaceflight transaction funded using a cryptocurrency. The arrangement has been cited as a milestone in the application of blockchain-based assets in high-value contracts.

Launch

The satellite is expected to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 as a rideshare payload. While initially planned for 2022, the mission has been rescheduled multiple times. As of 2025, it is listed in the Nanosats Database with a target launch window during that year.

Significance

  • Observers consider DOGE-1 significant for several reasons:
  • It represents the first cryptocurrency-funded space mission.
  • It introduces the use of CubeSats for cultural and commercial purposes beyond traditional science or defense.
  • It illustrates how internet culture, meme-driven communities, and private spaceflight can intersect.
