In the 18th century, following the death of Sir Charles Cope of Bruern in 1781, extensive demolition was carried out. Most of the original structure was demolished in the 18th century, with only the south-west tower and south wing surviving from the original 1498 construction.
 Kellogg College, University of Oxford, has practised excavation at the estate. Hanwell Castle is a Grade IIlisted building.
