The Divine Grace Conrad, Lord Azurahm of Draconia Anglorum, The Lord Primal Dragon Master for the British Isles, Ordo Draconis.O.D. Viscount to the House of the Duchy of Effenhauer (born Conrad Garry Pugsley; Template:Circa) is a Scottish Pagan priest, author, hereditary peer, and media personality. He became known for patrolling Sutton High Street, and is better known as the Wizard Man of Sutton.

Early life

Conrad Garry Pugsley was born in Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scotland, Template:Circa. His father was William Rostron Pugsley (1905–1970).[1][2] With his mother, Mary Strickland Garrety 'Molly' (née Brown; 1918–2003),[3] they moved to London when he was four years old. His parent's married in Hammersmith, Greater London in October 1968.[4] His maternal great-grandmother was Lady Margaret McChristie Strickland, a lady who married a commoner, a builder, so was disinherited from her titles. He has claimed that at the age of five, he was contacted by three "rogue beings of spiritual nature who taught me everything I needed to know about the craft, religion and life". He joined the Pagan faith and became a High priest. He also claims to have learnt "the dragon craft".[5] He attended the University of Scotland.[6]

Public image

Conrad rose to prominence as a media personality in the mid 2000s. He regularly patrolled Sutton High Street, dressed in purple and red Pagan robes. He was often spotted outside cafés or inside pubs along the high street.[7]

Conrad is the author of the spiritualism book, The Book of God, which was published by Caduceus in 1982.[8]

In December 2008, following a successful Facebook campaign that gathered almost 3,000 members, Conrad was invited to switch on the town's Christmas lights, sponsored by Asda.[9] Animal rights activists took against him and as a result, he stepped down to protect his own safety.[10] A man in a costume took his place instead; Conrad watched on from the sidelines.[11]

On 25 June 2007, Conrad was arrested for carrying an eight inch knife in public. That September, he appeared at Sutton Magistrates' Court, charged with possessing a knife in a public place. He had pleaded not guilty on religious grounds at an earlier hearing. Electing to be tried by a jury, he was scheduled to appear at Croydon Crown Court on 30 October.[12] His trial ended on 17 April 2008.[13] He won his trial.[14]

Conrad's rings

In July 2011, a Sutton teen paint a mural of Conrad.[15] Within a week of its unveilment, animal rights activists targeted the mural.[16]

Conrad was pitched to be a torch bearer during the 2012 Summer Olympics.[17]

Personal life

Conrad previously lived in North Cheam. He moved to Sutton, a town in the London Borough of Sutton, in 1978. There, in October 1980, he married Anne C Pugsley.[18] As of December 2024, he was living in a care home in Banstead, Surrey.Template:Citation needed

Conrad supports the National League football team Sutton United F.C.[19] and is a life-long member of the North Wales The Magic Circle.[20]

In August 2008, Zagan, a black cat that often sat on Conrad's shoulder, went missing for a week, after being hit by a car in Wallington, breaking his pelvis in four places.[21][22] In April 2009, Zagan gave birth to a litter of five kittens.[23] In March 2010, a house fire erupted at Conrad's flat on Durand Close in Carshalton.[24] The blaze killed all three of his cats, as well as, his dog, Gandalf; Conrad was not home when the fire started. Following the fire, Sutton Housing Partnership placed him in temporary accommodation.[25]

Since 2012, Conrad's legal name has been The Divine Grace Conrad, Lord Azurahm of Draconia Anglorum, The Lord Primal Dragon Master for the British Isles, Ordo Draconis.O.D. Viscount to the House of the Duchy of Effenhauer. In a 2013 interview, he spoke of his beliefs that "Draconia" was an ancient land that used to be the Middle East and "Anglorum" was a definition of Britain.[26]
