Baku State University is a leading public research university located in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Established in 1919, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions in the South Caucasus.

History

Baku State University was founded on September 1, 1919, by the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. The university began with faculties in history, philology, physics-mathematics, law, and medicine. It was modeled after European universities of the time and has since become a central institution for academic and scientific development in Azerbaijan.

In the Soviet era, the university grew significantly, and many of Azerbaijan’s leading scholars, politicians, and professionals are BSU alumni. Notably, Heydar Aliyev, former President of Azerbaijan, studied at BSU.
