Early Life
B.J. Jansen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, where his passion for music began at an early age. His journey in music started when his father introduced him to the world of jazz at the age of 10, providing him with an Alto Saxophone and recordings of Gerry Mulligan and Charlie Parker. Though initially beginning with the Alto Saxophone, it was the Baritone Saxophone that he truly found his voice on, performing with various college ensembles.
Career
B.J. Jansen's career as a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and educator has seen him perform on prestigious stages around the world. After relocating to Philadelphia in 2004, he immersed himself in the city’s jazz scene, learning from the streets and eventually moving to New York City in 2007, where he recorded albums, performed in respected venues, and collaborated with some of the greatest musicians of his time.
In 2018, Jansen made the move to Kansas City, Missouri, the birthplace of jazz legend Charlie Parker, continuing to develop his unique sound and performing on the historic grounds of jazz. His influence has extended beyond performance as he educates aspiring musicians and advocates for the music industry.
Jansen has recorded multiple albums as a leader, performed in numerous esteemed venues, and collaborated with notable musicians. His style, which blends traditional jazz with modern influences, has earned him respect as a key figure in contemporary jazz.
Personal Life
In addition to his work as a performer, B.J. Jansen is a committed educator, mentoring young musicians and supporting initiatives that aim to improve lives through music. He is an Endorsing Artist for Yanagisawa Saxophones and Harry Hartmann’s Fiberreed, and also serves as a Conn Selmer Clinician.
Jansen holds an MBA in Music Management from William Paterson University of New Jersey and a BA in Jazz Studies from the University of Louisville, School of Music. His education has given him the tools to navigate both the artistic and business sides of the music industry, helping shape his successful career.
Through his music and mentoring, B.J. Jansen continues to inspire future generations of musicians, blending the rich tradition of jazz with new and exciting innovations.
