Andrew James Sackl, professionally known as James Sackl, is an Australian entrepreneur, founder and writer based in Melbourne, Victoria. He founded Wallace Biotechnologies and Terraform Technologies and publishes essays, podcasts and videos through the Golden Age project.[1]
Sackl began his commercial career in 2007, when he established Young Media at the age of 21. The company operated as a classified advertising platform for younger audiences and local businesses. His later business interests included property, recruitment, migration services, restaurants and other ventures, followed by work in technology and biotechnology.[2]
Early life and Young Media
Sackl was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. His published biography states that his parents separated when he was young and that he encountered difficulties during his teenage years. He later left home, worked in a range of jobs and began developing his first business after finishing school.[3]
In 2007, when he was 21, Sackl established Young Media. He began selling advertising opportunities to local businesses before the website had been completed and used advance advertising revenue to support its development. The business later expanded into other Australian cities and was subsequently sold.[4]
Business career
Following the sale of Young Media, Sackl states that he entered the property sector through investment and housing developments. He later expanded his activities into recruitment and migration services. His biography also describes involvement in restaurants and several other businesses.[5]
Between October 2013 and December 2018, Sackl served as a director of five companies: Dash Technologies Pty Ltd, Ad Astra Institute Pty Ltd, Karma3 Upcycling Pty Ltd, Sino Resources Group (Aust) Pty Ltd and Universal Personnel Pty Ltd.[6]
ASIC stated that the five companies operated in areas including software development, vocational education, animal-feed production, migration services and employment services.[7]
Agriculture
Sackl was involved in cattle production at Blue Lake Station in South Australia together with Michael Famularo. In 2017, Blue Lake Station received the South Australian Most Outstanding Beef Producer award at the Meat Standards Australia Excellence in Eating Quality Awards.[8]
The award was presented as part of the Meat Standards Australia Excellence in Eating Quality Awards, which recognised producers and businesses participating in the MSA program in connection with meat eating quality.[9]
COVID-19 testing business
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sackl became involved in the development and distribution of diagnostic testing products. According to his own account, his business initially obtained distribution rights for an antibody test kit and later worked on an integrated testing pen intended for SARS-CoV-2 testing.[10]
Sackl states that the product was subsequently redesigned as a pen-shaped device containing the testing components and buffer fluid within a single format. He also states that the business entered into a supply agreement in 2021 and generated approximately A$130 million in sales during 2021 and 2022.[11]
The sales figures originate from Sackl's own website and are therefore presented as figures reported by him rather than independently verified financial results.
